From June 23 to 25, Zhou Zhongshu, President of Minmetals, attended the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2010 at the UN headquarters in New York, and participated in the 10th anniversary of the UN Global Compact. During the Summit, President Zhou had a friendly meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and was the only Chinese entrepreneur at the summit to deliver an important speech.
On the evening of June 23, President Zhou attended the welcome meeting that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held for representatives in the United Nations Security Council hall. On the morning of June 24, the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2010 was opened, and Mr. Ban Ki-moon made opening remarks. On the first plenary session on "Setting the Sustainability Agenda", the Global Compact CEO Study 2010 was submitted by Accenture, and a video featuring President Zhou talking about sustainability was played. "Sustainable development is not only a requirement of corporate social responsibility, but also a requirement of corporate survival and development." President Zhou said, "Sustainable development is a trend of today's world, and a common and necessary choice for the human society to jointly deal with problems such as resources shortage, climate change and environmental pollution." His ideas were highly regarded by the audience.
After the opening ceremony, President Zhou held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, who was pleased to meet President Zhou and spoke highly of the prestige and achievement of Minmetals under Mr. Zhou's leadership. He highly appreciated Minmetals' sustainable development concepts and achievements, and its great efforts in climate change and environmental protection which set a good example for other developing countries; and he hopes Minmetals can, in its global operation, continue to help other developing countries promote their social and economic development. President Zhou expressed consent with what the Secretary-General said in his opening remarks; that is, the government should take corporate social responsibility seriously, and enterprises should fully implement these social responsibilities and steadfastly contribute to environmental protection, community development and job creation. President Zhou also said Minmetals would abide by the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, as it always has. Throughout the meeting, the discussion was heated and friendly. Before the talk, President Zhou took a photo with the Secretary-General, who also gladly agreed to sign his name on Minmetals' 2009 Sustainability Report (English version) and wrote in Chinese "To President Zhou Zhongshu, from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon" on the front page of the report. Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, was also present at the meeting.
The second plenary meeting took place on the afternoon of June 24, with the theme of "Leading Change". The UN Global Compact introduced the "Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership", which presents the contribution of Minmetals (one of the 20 enterprises as members of the UN Global Compact Environment Pioneer Team) to the United Nations, and describes some successful cases of Minmetals.
On the evening of June 24, President Zhou attended a banquet celebrating the 10th anniversary of the UN Global Compact. Invited by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President Zhou took a seat between the Secretary-General and his wife. With over 1,200 leaders all over the world, the banquet looked back upon a lot of milestone events, strong supporters and best practices that helped UN Global Compact become the largest organization of CSR creative activities, and helped achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Before the banquet began, President Zhou participated in a meeting of 20 outstanding business leaders, which was convened by the Secretary-General.
On the morning of June 25, the third plenary meeting was held, with the topic of "Achieving Development". President Zhou was invited to deliver a speech on the development experience of Minmetals. He talked about Minmetals' practices in economic development, environmental protection, poverty relief, and other aspects of social responsibilities; and in particular, Minmetals' outstanding efforts in honoring international corporate citizenship in Australia, Peru and Laos. As Minmetals has a track record of addressing challenges while delivering profits, President Zhou's deep insights in this regard contributed tremendously to the meeting.
The social responsibility achievements of Minmetals were effectively publicized in the summit. Both President Zhou's video in support of the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit and Minmetals' CSR achievements were prominently showed on the official websites of the summit. On site, Minmetals' logo appeared on the summit's flags and posters, and the summit handbook also featured a whole-page of Minmetals' motto of "Cherish Limited Resources and Pursue Sustainable Development". In addition, Minmetals also set up an exhibition stand on site, displayed and dispensed corporate publications such as the company's sustainability report, which drew wide attention from the attending leaders.
The UN Global Compact Leaders Summit, sponsored by the United Nations and personally hosted by the Secretary-General, is the highest-level event in the global business community on corporate social responsibility. The attendees include leaders from businesses, governments, civil societies, labor organizations, investment institutes, academic community and the United Nations. Wang Zhongyu, former Vice Chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of China Enterprise Confederation, attended the summit and addressed the audience. Sha Zukang (United Nations Under-Secretary-General), Ambassador Li Baodong (China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations), and senior executives from China Development Bank, China National Petroleum Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and Baosteel Group were also present at the summit.
